They err, we err—but does Ware ever err? Given that the protagonist never discovers this history that the reader is privy to, the novel refuses a simple conclusion in which the protagonist finds or even fully knows himself.

I very much preferred the content of the more recent “Building Stories” by the same author, where the main character, despite being another sad sack, is presented in much more depth. The Smartest Kid on Earthwho is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. On the technical side, this book is a formal masterpiece and it’s easy to see why it has dominated the visual jjimmy of the last decade — this is the book that invents the language of cartooning that we use today.
