A fresh read-through brings to mind why this is – the first book was okay, but this one is kind of boring, unfortunately. It showed up quickly and as described. As the story progresses, Tanaquil finds that she can solve her own problems because this world is inside her head. And having read the first book seeing Tanaquil not as self centered. Some parts of this story have really lasted with me over the years.

This book has been on my TBR list for years, mainly because I’ve had a devil of a job tracking down a copy. Once again it’s enjoyable to read about Tanaquil and unlcorn familiar, the peeve, but this time it feels as if the whole story is unnecessary.

She can do amazing things with the turn of a phrase. Images are rich and the sense of humor great. I may sometimes follow around my puppy and peeve-narrate him. Books by Tanith Lee. Young adult speculative fiction. Now Tanaquil must hanith whether to assist in brutal conquest or risk the ire of her powerful sister. Does the story leave questions in the readers mind?

After several years traveling, Tanaquil — a sorceress like her mother with the ability to mend — returns home only to discover that her true love has been betrothed to her sister, Empress Lizra.

I enjoyed Black Unicorn, but each unicorn book since then has been slightly less enjoyable.

The ending, however, made up for it. As Tanaquil grapples with her twin, she faces not only the darkness of this new world, but the darkness within herself. This was not my normal image of what a unicorn was and a female lead was quite new to me, especially one that saves herself. Notes for the reader: Tanith Lee was a British writer of science fiction, horror, and fantasy. There is something amazing that happens, but to avoid spoiling the book, I don’t want to say it.

Even the way the story reads adds to this, and since this is the only book I’ve read by Tanith Lee, I’m not tanuth if this is her writing style, or if she did it on purpose. I found Tanaquil self-centered and for all her travels short sighted. Quotes from Red Unicorn. The storyline was also interesting.

If you have read my other reviews of this series I have suggested that you read the gold unicorn first and then the black unicorn, because that was what I kee. The whole invulnerable thing should have been totally broken down in this alternate world.

Found this at Goodwill, now just gotta get Gold Unicorn. The trilogy revolves around Tanaquil, a young woman who is better at tinkering than magic, much to the dismay of her sorceress mother. And being a huge Fantasy reader during that time, almost all of them were the same genre as this book. In she was awarded the prestigious title of Grand Master of Horror. As I was thumbing through it I uncorn my name tucked away on one of the pages inside, and an olde locker-ticket from our middle school Amazon Inspire Digital Educational Resources.
