Ramayana Series by Ashok K. Banker
However, what I found annoying was the usage of modern day terms unnecessarily. His descriptions are good, sometimes verging on genius, and his depiction of Vishwamitra’s boundless power is fascinating and riveting. Some logic that is! Now, with breathtaking imagination and brilliant storytelling, Ashok K. I have read the first six books twice, and I have re-started with the third round, once again a few weeks ago.
In short, it gets confusing. Ramayan is a Religion for Indians and it is hard for me to digest this kind of a narration and the language used. So, don’t expect much trouble in the journey. A real Vamp in bankee sense. This brings freshness to the old stories and ramayaba their intricate, discursive narratives more accessible to an audience that has been bred on the linear plots of Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
Banker, reinventing the Ramayan!
Next book it is!! He speaks positively of the practice of Sati, where a woman commits suicide upon her husband’s funeral pyre. So, it is quite graphic, amorous and you do feel scared for Rama through out the series. In the first half of the book particularly, the author uses at many places, language that seems out of sync with the time period he is writing about-some more modern usage like the brothers addressing each other as “bhai” or Lakshman and Shatrugan being addressed as “Luck” and “Shot”- a tad too modern for the Ramayana.

Since I haven’t read the Indian epic in its original form or as close to ‘original’ as an English translation can bethe entire story is ramayzna to me. Ram and Sita were childhood friends and Ram secretly desires her, so much so as Laxman desires Urmila!! And trying to insert scientific, geographical knowledge etc. First published inVertigo was highly praised by critics and readers alike at the time, including the late Dom Moraes.

His work has been optioned for abnker to television or film several times over the years, usually with Banker himself attached as screenwriter.
I will await your reviews to take up Book 1 of the series…I am presuming that the rsmayana need to be read in the chronological order indicated? Ashok Banker is a brilliant writer and this is a great book and he’s got his heart in the right place, but there are some things I’m not happy about.
Book Series: Ramayan Series by Ashok Banker | Rajesh Naik
He could’ve written about someone else entirely; or even better – about someone fictitious. And the trip continues. I guess this is one more of the same.
I was skeptical about reading it first, but I was caught completely unawares. You don’t see a lot of fantasy with ‘paan’ and ‘yojana’ in it. I am enjoying this book and will probably be reading the whole series in the future. Jan 06, Sudhir rated it really liked it.
