This one is a much different book from its predecessor, yes there is also a mystery and Wexford is present, but only tangentially so. Book ratings by Goodreads. Also there is a scene of Painter being hung is in front of a large Cross as if Jesus gave the okay. Half-way through this one and I was beginning to think Rendell’s stand alone novels would be the stand outs, but then something weird happened. Great characters, great story with plausible surprises.

Had the narrative concentrated more closely on those elements I suspect Leaase would be og a more enthusiastic review.

I just couldn’t get into the story at all. It’s a brave thing to rdndell a detective’s second outing into a book that is not a true detective story in that one is rather retreading the fo of an old case, but Rendell does it with aplomb. The first volume left me with a vision of a Wexford half formed, or at least a little more tenuous than the fascinating characters with whom he shared his debut.

Rendell writes and presents ddath story exactly as if she were creating a murder mystery, but there is no mystery, none at all, just a series of revelations that arise through pure coincidence and lead every one to some very obvious conclusions about everything from the crime itself to the way in which their lives have been affected by it.

Wexford’s first ever successful murder case comes back to haunt him when a vicar starts to rake up the past.

Mrs Primero was killed when she was 90 and the pastor bringing out reasons why people wanted her dead maybe for money. He wants to prove Wexford wrong, and in gendell into the lives of the witnesses questioned all those years ago, he stirs up more than old ghosts. Might have to look this lady up later. The concept may seem a little ludicrous today to many of us today but such things were believed back then and indeed are still prevalent to a certain extent.

And yet, I didn’t really dig this one. But it took too long for the road to wind ’round that way, and I don’t think it was me being thick. Didnt see the twist at the end which is always a plus for a mystery book.
